Medlars, the first fruits of the season

It’s alimurgic food

Alimurgic fod

In these days, walking in the Santiago de Caçem wood, we found the first fruits of the season, medlars, very good!

Freshly harvested are rich of all their nutrients, mineral, vitamin A and flavonoids.

These medlars are the japanese quality, the most diffuse here, like in Italy.

Together with medlars we collected bay leaves, which we’ll dry and wild fennel, because we want to eat with pasta in Sicilian style😋.

Walk & collect…laurel leaves

When I’m walking in the woods, I always observe the nature around.

In this moment we live in Santiago do Caçem, one of the most nice city in alentejo, a south region of Portugal.

Santiago, anciently called Mirobriga, from its first habitants, the Celts, is a beautiful city surrounded by greenery, ideal for who, like me, loves natural habitats. where make walking.

Serra do Conde do Aviles

After Celts, the ancient Romans arrived on the territory and with them, the green culture was strenghten.

Here there are hills, a little like Rome…🤔 It can be they chose this territory because remembered them Rome??? Boh.

However, every hill is full of trees, typical of Mediterranean bush ( even thought we’re in west Portugal, on Atlantic Ocean), and one of these is Laurel.

Laurel, Lauracee family.

Laurel is an aromatic plant, usually used for cooking fish and meat; it gives a good taste to the dishes and also has healthy properties: astringent, diuretic, digestive, antiinflammatory.

It contains vitamin C, potassium, caffeic acid which lowers bad cholesterol and rutina for the proper functioning of the capillaries.

After I collect it, let it dry in a paper bag, and then, I put it in a glass jar and I use it to make infusions too.😄

Portulaca is…alimurgic food

In Italy but also in other countries, when you walk in a public garden in a city, in mountain or in the country side it’s easy to see at your feet a small plant called “portulaca”.

It makes flowers so, it stay very well on balcony 🌺but is an excellent food…from the street😆…omelette, salad, riches in omega 3 and cheap.

Easy to cook, in internet you can find many recipes.

Portulaca is part of tradition to recognize, pick up and to eat plants not cultivated, that grow wild.

Bon appetite!😃
